Duke Student Winner of Barry Scholarship
Lizzie Bond T'21 from Norfolk, VA is one of nine students selected to receive a John & Daria Barry Scholarship. The Barry Scholarship is a unique scholarship that provides a generous award in recognition of a student’s dedication to the academic vocation and the pursuit of truth. She will be reading the MPhil in Early Modern History (1500-1700) at Magdalen College, Oxford.
Lizzie recently graduated magna cum laude from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in History (concentrating in Law and Governance) and English, along with a minor in Political Science. She received Highest Distinction for her Senior Honors Thesis in History, which examined how 17th-century women’s petitions across Britain and its Atlantic empire served as a unique forum for women to access the law and comment upon it in politically significant ways.
The Barry Scholarship is unique in that the candidates are nominated by leading professors and institutions for the award. A committee then invites candidates to submit evidence of their academic accomplishments, plans for research, and their interests in teaching.
