Why Duke?
This scholarship is an honorable expression of gratitude for a legacy that lives on through the lives of those who receive it. It represents a new era of monetary awards that funds the impossible and celebrates the irreplaceable. It serves as an acknowledgement for a difference well made and a call to action for an impact still in process. The name this scholarship carries is one of triumph in the face of defeat. Reginaldo Howard's ambition accompanied with his genuine care for the betterment of his community is what made his impact so great. These characteristics are a necessity in this world; although Reginaldo Howard could not be here to continue his work, this scholarship serves as a catalyst for his legacy. It shows that Howard's impact was not rendered obsolete by his passing. By contrast, it opens the door for more students with similar ambition and genuine care for the betterment of their community to continue his legacy. The scholarship shows the vitality and responsibility of a response. In the face of defeat, this scholarship paved the way for triumph. In the face of the passing of a beloved gem in the community, this scholarship brought the passing of the torch from Reginaldo to his Reggies. It is this monetary response that has allowed for growth in the Duke community and honor for Howard's legacy, and I consider it a great privilege to be a part of that legacy.
