Why Duke?
After my first Duke informational college tour, I found a shady spot in what I would learn was Bryan Center Plaza. Students filled the plaza, and I could feel a unique palpable excitement among them about being Duke students. That was when I knew that I too wanted to make Duke my future home. The excitement, innovation, and community at Duke is unparalleled. My freshman year will start with Project BUILD—a pre-orientation program based on community service. I aim to further my interest in community service at Duke through my four years with the guidance of my scholarship. I also hope to join a dance team and delve into research through Bass Connections with Duke professors that aim to inspire interdisciplinary dialogue.
Being a part of the B.N. Duke Scholarship and OUSF promotes a collaborative atmosphere and inclusive community that pushes me to explore both my academic and personal as well as service interests. Having the opportunity to participate in two summers of community engagement—one in the Carolinas and one abroad—allows me to follow my passion while ensuring that I am both grounded yet global-thinking.
