Mellon Project: The Construction of Romantic Love: A Qualitative Exploration of Intimacy, Passion, and Commitment in Contemporary Relationships

This study aims to explore the social construction of romantic love and its associated meanings and practices through the lens of Robert J. Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love. The research will examine how intimacy, passion, and commitment are defined and operationalized in contemporary partnerships and how these definitions inform people’s dating and courtship practices. The study will utilize theoretical and maximum variation sampling methods to gather a diverse sample of interview subjects, including those in non-monogamous relationships, and LGBTQ+ community, especially those who identify as aromantic, asexual, and/or non-binary. The study will involve 6-8 in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which will be transcribed and coded to identify patterns and themes. The research aims to contribute to an understanding of how minoritized identities have conceptualized and experienced love outside of hegemonic norms. It is my hope for my study to provide insight into the meaning of love and partnership in contemporary society, which has undergone significant shifts from traditional norms and expectations.
